Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin, which most people know as Botox, temporarily relaxes the muscles that produce expression lines: between the brows, across the forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. With those muscles moving less, the skin over them stops folding and the lines soften. It does not fill, and it does not change the volume of the face.
The effect is temporary and reversible: it lasts a few months and then the muscle recovers its movement. That is why it is repeated periodically — and why a result you did not love is not permanent.
At the consultation the doctor looks at your skin, your history and what you want to achieve, and that is where it gets decided whether this treatment is the right one, whether another one suits you better, or whether it is worth waiting. If what you are expecting is not realistic, she will tell you.

Who it is for
It is among the most requested treatments and usually the first one people try. It works best on lines that appear when you move; lines already set at rest improve, but do not always disappear entirely.
Not administered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or to anyone under 18.
What the appointment involves

Assessing the movement
The doctor asks you to frown, raise your brows and smile, to see which muscles are making each line. That decides which areas to treat and how many units to use.

Injection
The area is cleansed and several very small injections are given with a fine needle. The injecting itself takes only minutes and most people describe it as light pinpricks.

What to do for the rest of the day
Small bumps may be left and disappear shortly. The doctor tells you what to avoid for the next few hours: no bending over repeatedly, no heavy exercise, no massaging the area.

Will my face look frozen?

That is not the intention and not what is aimed at here. The amount is matched to your own movement so the lines soften and your face still moves. If you want something very subtle, say so at the consultation — less can be used.
When does it start to show?

Not immediately. It begins to show in the first few days and the full effect appears between the second and fourth week, which is why the review appointment is at 2 to 3 weeks.
